Title
Unheard Sounds

Aims
To find more effective techniques of communicating a notion of personal fear through my current practice.

To explore a range of digital technologies to find the most relevant and immersive medium for my practice.

Investigate other artists working in similar fields and examine their work, comparing and contrasting it with my own.

Research questions
How can I immerse the viewer in my own notions of fear?

How will the digital technology play a part in creating an experience?

How will other theories and artists inform the practice?

Of whom can I ask questions?
. Peer group
. Tutors/visiting tutors
. Public
. Visual artists

. Video artists
. Audio artists
. Technicians

Who are the intended users/ observers?

Major areas worth investigating
Artists that use binaural audio technology in contemporary art.

Films that create suspense and anxiety in the audience.

Investigation of film terminology and film composition

Critics and psychologists analysis of film (psychoanalysis.)

Theories of the sublime and the artists that use this theory in their practice.

How will this project help me in my personal development?
To develop skills in video and audio techniques.

The ability to realise the wider contexts that my work addresses.

Develop and edit research techniques.

Expand and develop my artistic vocabulary and use this dialogue to gain funding for future community/personal projects and technical equipment.

The rational of my project
What: To produce an experience that immerses the listener, disrupting the balance between the actual and the virtual by placing them in a situation of uncertainty.

Why: To produce an all encompassing and immersive experience of fear through the medium of binaural audio. By concentrating on perfecting the quality of the recording, and continuing to incorporate play in my work I intend to take the viewer on a journey. The journey should allow the listener to experience a feeling of sublimity, replacing what is actually happening around them with a new and intimate reality. By referencing the immediate physical surroundings of the listener and providing directional instructions throughout the walk the work can take over more than just their sense of sound, and change their perception of the reality around them.

Assessment Outcomes
Learning Goal/Assessment Outcome 1:
Through my research gain an understanding of how a sense of personal fear (fear of the dark and fear of unexplained sounds) can become translated to an audience.

Learning Goal/Assessment Outcome 2:
To produce installations and projects that places the audience in a particular relationship of uncertainty playing on the notion of an experience of fear and anxiety.

Learning Goal/Assessment Outcome 3:
To develop my project management skills and enhance my personal practice through curation, particularly through Transition exhibition where a document has been produced.

Learning Goal/Assessment Outcome 4:

To develop digital technology skills working with CCTV cameras and binaural audio to produce artwork.
